Unlike other large cats, cheetahs rarely show hostility towards humans and are known to be fairly sociable. Throughout history, many different civilizations have seen and interacted with cheetahs and have incorporated them into their folklore and art. Cheetahs were once found in a much larger range that included Palestine, central India, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan. However, due to many different factors such as habitat loss and fragmentation, they are now found in roughly 24 percent of their historic range.

Present Status Cheetahs are listed as a vulnerable species. Roughly 7,000 to 10,000 remain in the wild. Habitat loss and fragmentation is a major threat along with sport hunting, a decreasing prey base, conflict with farmers, and increasing competition with lions for territory. Cheetahs are protected by national laws in most of their range. Other conservation efforts include improved livestock management to reduce conflicts with farmers and the establishment of protected areas for their habitats.
