The third largest land mammal, hippopotamuses frequent the shallow waters, swamps, rivers, and lakes in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Notorious for their territorial nature, hippos are extremely dangerous and have been known to attack humans and flip boats.

Present Status: The common hippo is listed as vulnerable, while the pygmy hippo is listed as endangered due to deforestation. The main threats to common hippos are habitat loss and illegal hunting for ivory and meat. Common and pygmy hippos are protected by legislation.
